BAO bolsters sustainability

London’s favourite Taiwanese small plates spot BAO has become a staple of the capital’s food scene over the last few years. Introducing Belu filtered water is just one of the bold moves they’ve taken across their operations since launching, in a shift to be more sustainable.

Having introduced many Brits to bao buns, they are constantly innovating and evolving their menu to offer unique and new flavours. Now in six locations across London; Soho, King’s Cross, Marylebone, Shoreditch, Borough and Battersea Power Station, BAO is looking to its supply chain to reduce its carbon footprint and support causes across the world by partnering with suppliers who share their values.

The restaurant group is backed by London dining legends JKS and has recently added Belu’s filtration machines to a number of locations to provide filtered still and sparkling water in refillable bottles to cut down on single use bottle waste. Belu is a drinks company and social enterprise which gives 100% of its profits to WaterAid to support water projects around the world. To date Belu has given £5.8 million and transformed over 366,000 lives with access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.

Holly Letch, Head of Sustainability at JKS says,
“It’s a win-win to be partnering with Belu at BAO (and many of our other JKS restaurants). We are able to minimise single-use glass by opting for filtration systems and therefore also mitigate associated emissions from packaging, transporting and chilling bottles. We are also able to increase our charity efforts, by working with a social enterprise who are sincere and proactive in driving their vision of eradicating water poverty.”

The team at BAO aren’t just giving guests a great meal and service, they’re also giving back to local communities. In January 2024 sustainability ambassadors across BAO and JKS volunteered for a day at the Felix Project, a charity that feeds Londoners in need with surplus food. Volunteers packed over 4000 meals for people who don’t have access to nutritious and delicious food or cooking facilities.

BAO is a fusion of fun and flavour, the ultimate East meets West dining spot for those who want to try something new and spend their time and money at a place with real heart and soul. After you’ve finished your meal, there’s also a karaoke room, if you fancy belting out some tunes.

For those who are CODE members, you can also enjoy 25% off food Sunday to Thursday.
