What is Natural Mineral Water?

When people talk about “mineral water”, it often sounds interchangeable with spring water or even tap water in a bottle. In reality, natural mineral water has a very specific meaning in UK law, and it tells an important story about where the water comes from, how it is protected, and why it tastes the way it does.

For Belu, that story starts underground in the hills of mid‑Wales and runs all the way to how water is treated, bottled and shared.

What is natural mineral water?

Under UK and European regulations, water can only be called natural mineral water if it meets strict legal criteria. It must:

  • Come from a protected underground source
  • Be naturally pure and microbiologically safe
  • Have a stable mineral composition over time
  • Be bottled at source, without chemical disinfection or treatment that alters its nature

Unlike tap water, natural mineral water is not treated with chlorine or purified after extraction. Unlike spring water, it must also pass additional testing to prove its mineral content remains consistent year after year.

This stability is what gives natural mineral water its character. The minerals dissolved during the water’s slow journey through rock layers shape both taste and mouthfeel, producing water that is recognisably consistent from bottle to bottle.

How natural mineral water is formed

Natural mineral water is the result of time, geology and protection. Rainfall seeps slowly through layers of rock deep underground, often over many years. As it moves, the water is naturally filtered and absorbs minerals from the surrounding geology. Because the source is shielded from surface pollution, its original purity is preserved until the moment it is bottled.

By law, this water must be bottled at the source itself. It cannot be transported elsewhere for processing, which is why the location of a mineral water source matters so much.

Belu’s natural mineral water source in mid‑Wales

Belu natural mineral water is drawn from a dedicated underground source in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the hills of mid‑Wales. The water is bottled at source at our partner Montgomery Waters and served as still or sparkling, with no artificial alteration to its mineral balance.

Sourcing and bottling entirely within the UK helps us keep our supply chain tighter and our carbon impact lower than importing filled bottles from abroad. It also means the water’s journey is shorter and simpler; from protected ground to glass or rPET bottle, then directly to UK hospitality and workplaces.

Belu water is officially classified as natural mineral water, meaning it meets the regulatory requirements around purity, stability and provenance.

Why mineral composition matters

Mineral water gets its name for a reason. Naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium contribute to taste, mouthfeel and consistency. Because natural mineral water must maintain a stable composition over time, drinkers know what to expect. That predictability is part of why mineral water is trusted in hospitality; it performs consistently whether still or sparkling and complements food without overpowering it.

We publish typical mineral analysis data for our water on every bottle, in line with labelling requirements for natural mineral water, so customers can make informed choices about what they are serving and drinking.

Our Purpose:  Changing the way the world sees water

Belu was founded as a UK social enterprise, with the belief that bottled water could be done better. Since 2011, we have committed 100% of our net profits to WaterAid, helping fund access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene around the world.

That purpose influences every decision we make, from where water is sourced to how it is packaged and distributed.
We bottle our mineral water in UK‑made lightweight glass and 100% recycled plastic (rPET), both designed to reduce material use and emissions. We do not export our bottled water and focus instead on serving UK hospitality, workplaces and events responsibly.

Mineral water in a changing world

As conversations around single‑use packaging, carbon impact and water scarcity continue to grow, natural mineral water sits at an interesting crossroads.

On one hand, its protected underground origin and minimal processing make it one of the most tightly regulated and transparent drinks categories in the UK. On the other, brands have a responsibility to address the environmental and social impacts of bottling and distribution. Our approach combines British‑sourced natural mineral water, low‑impact packaging, and profit‑for‑purpose funding, aiming to show that water can be served responsibly without losing quality or integrity.

Why understanding natural mineral water matters

Knowing what natural mineral water really is helps people make clearer choices.

It explains why mineral water tastes the way it does, why it must be bottled at source, and why not all bottled water is the same. It also brings attention back to the source itself, reminding us that good water depends on long‑term protection of land, geology and ecosystems.

For us, serving natural mineral water is about more than refreshment. It is about respecting the source, minimising harm, and using every bottle as a way to support access to clean water far beyond the UK.
